Reflections of Shirin Neshat

DiscoverDTLA is proud to present, Reflections of Shirin Neshat, a short film produced in collaboration with The Broad Museum and Emmy-Winning Film Composer and Pianist Kris Bowers (Green Book, Dear White People, Mrs. America).

The film stars Kris Bowers who composed and performed an original composition inspired by The Broad’s last special exhibition, SHIRIN NESHAT: I WILL GREET THE SUN AGAIN, which was on display from October 19th, 2019 to February 16th, 2020 in the museum’s downstairs gallery. At just under 7 minutes in length, Reflections is an emotional and visual exploration of Shirin’s work as seen through the eyes of Mr. Bowers.

“One of the first things that struck me about Shirin Neshat’s work is the visceral, emotional impact that her imagery and films deliver,” explained Mr. Bowers regarding his impression of the exhibit. “I was incredibly moved by her criticism, yet deep love and respect for her homeland, as well as her commentary on violence and the fragility, yet great power, of human life.”

This is not the first time that the three have partnered to create content for a Broad special exhibition; the first was for the hugely successful, Soul of a Nation.

Production was executed by creative studio, o! thy fleecy., under the direction of Gianina Ferreyra and William Devin Walsh, as well as cinematographer Adriel Gonzalez.

“As filmmakers, we came of age during the era of 9/11, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars,” said directors William & Gianina. “There was an incredible misunderstanding in our generation about what Persian Culture, or Middle Eastern Culture as a whole, is truly all about. We made it our mission to humbly try and translate Kris’ emotions and Shirin’s intentions so that we might depict where these two worlds collide in the beauty of humanity set at The Broad.”

On a personal note: As a publication in Downtown Los Angeles, we were honored to have had the opportunity to help facilitate this wonderful film and all the artists involved. We now invite you to use the player above, or visit The Broad’s social media, and view Reflections of Shirin Neshat.
